The area of the Rakovica municipality comprises the majority of the accommodation facilities of Croatia-Plitvice-lakes-_1-24.htm" target="_self">Plitvice Lakes National Park, especially the large campsite Korana. Rakovica, a village in the funnel-shaped area of shallow karst of the Slunj plate in the north-eastern part of Lika, 15 km north of the Plitvice Lakes; elevation 391 m. The landscape is dominated by karst phenomena; the most prominent are the caves called Baraceve Pecine (Barac Caves) near Nova Krslja. Mainoccupations are farming and livestock breeding. Rakovica is located on the main road (M13.01, E71). A monument dedicated to Eugen Kvarternik and his comrades, who fell in the Rakovicka Revolt in 1871, was erected along the main road in 1933.

Plitvice Lakes are composed of 16 interlinked lakes between the mountains of Mala Kapela and Pljesivica in the region of Lika. The whole area is on certain maps called the Devils Garden, due to its landscape and history. According to the legend the Plitvice lakes were created after a long period of drought. People, animals and nature were longing for water, even the Black River went dry. People prayed and prayed. Then appeared in the valley the Black Queen with her magnificent suite; a strong wind begun to blow and with a thunder rain fell down on earth. The rain was falling until the water had grown enough to create the Lakes.
