The remnants of the old walls and city tower are a reminder of the era of the Dukes of the family Frankopan whose four hundred year rule left deep spiritual and material traces in Vinodol. Bribir experienced its greatest growth during the reign of Duke Bernardin Frankopan who fortified the castle and city walls. When feudalism was abolished in 1848, the Bribir municipal authorities pulled down the Vela and Mala gates and castle and a school was built in its place. So it was that the long and glorious history of the Bribir fortress ended in ruins. The only remnant of the Bribir fortress is the quadrangular tower built in 1302 and part of the old walls. A clear view of the valley and Croatia-Kvarner-Bay--Novi-Vinodolski_1-2-42.htm" target="_self">Novi Vinodolski is offered from atop the hill on which the old town is located.

The Kvarner Bay is situated in the northern Adriatic Sea, between the Istrian peninsula and the northern Croatian seacoast. The main islands within the Kvarner are Croatia-Island-Cres_1-10.htm" target="_self">Cres, Croatia-Island-Krk_1-6.htm" target="_self">Krk, Croatia-Island-Pag_1-9.htm" target="_self">Pag, Croatia-Island-Rab_1-8.htm" target="_self">Rab and Croatia-Island-Losinj_1-7.htm">Losinj. The main portion of the Kvarner bay is that between the mainland, Cres and Krk. A smaller body of water located between Cres, Krk, Rab and Pag is called Kvarneric (the little Kvarner). The bay is notable for its depth, which allows for the city of Rijeka at its northernmost point to have a sea port that can handle the largest ships (tankers and such).
