Podgora, a village and port in the Makarska littoral, 9 km southeast of Croatia-Central-Dalmatia--Makarska_1-4-53.htm" target="_self">Makarska. The village has a number of sources of potable water and a medicinal saltwater source called Klokun. Main occupations include farming, growing of vines and olives, seafaring, fishing and tourism. Podgora is located on the main road (M2, E65). Defence towers against the Turks were built in the 17th and the 18th centuries in the upper part of the village, i.e. in the hamlets of Roscici and Marinovici. The portal at the entrance of the hotel park and the interesting octagonal chapel are the only remains of the Baroque summer residence of the Mrkusic family. The cemetery features mediaeval tombstones and the monument to Mihovil Pavlinovic, a work by Ivan Rendic. On an elevation above the port is a monumental monument representing the wings of a seagull, made in 1962. The new, modern-style church (in the shape of a ship) was erected on the coast after the earthquake in 1962.

Central Dalmatia stretches from the river Krke in the northwest down to Croatia-Central-Dalmatia--Makarska_1-4-53.htm" target="_self">Makarska. Central Dalmatia?s main characteristics are its rocky landscape and its lack of running water: with the acceptation of the river Cetina which runs through a canyon to Croatia-Central-Dalmatia--Omis_1-4-54.htm" target="_self">Omis and out into the sea. The climate here is typically Mediterranean with hot and dry summers and cool and rainy winters. In Central Dalmatia, tourism is quite developed and offers a variety of activities, recreation, entertainment and accommodation. Guests can choose from accommodations such as apartments, rooms, hotels or campsites.Like other regions in Croatia, Central Dalmatia is known for its gastronomic specialties such as seafood dishes and meat dishes which are prepared with a Dalmatian twist. These delicacies are offered in all of the many restaurants and taverns throughout Dalmatia. From the town of Croatia-Northern-Dalmatia--Primosten_1-5-71.htm" target="_self">Primosten and towards the southwest, Dalmatia?s landscape varies. There are larger islands which are quite far apart from each other and are rich in vegetation. With the islands being so far apart, the maestral wind blows quite strongly through the canals in between the islands and, as a result, the waves get quite rough. Some of the larger islands are Croatia-Island-Brac_1-13.htm" target="_self">Brac, island of Croatia-Island-Hvar_1-14.htm" target="_self">Hvar, island of Vis, Croatia-Island-Solta_1-18.htm" target="_self">Solta, Croatia-Island-Ciovo_1-21.htm" target="_self">Ciovo, Croatia-Central-Dalmatia--Drvenik_1-4-59.htm" target="_self">Drvenik (Large and Small), Bisevo, and Jabuka. Each island offers great hospitality and is unique and beautiful in its own way.
